About Us

The Japanese Unit at IHRA, University of Colombo, is dedicated to promoting cultural understanding and language proficiency through its innovative education and training programs. Our unit, under the esteemed guidance of Ms. Shirani Kolambage, a Consultant Japanese Language at The University of Tokyo Sri Lanka Office, strives to provide a comprehensive learning experience.

What We Offer

Our course Diploma in Japanese Language (DJL), including the Certificate Course in Basic Japanese Language (CBJL), Certificate Course in Intermediate Japanese Language (CIJL), Certificate Course in Advanced Japanese Language (CAJL), and Diploma in Japanese Language (DJL) cater to individuals seeking to explore the richness of the Japanese language and culture.

>>Japanese Workshop at the “JICA”

CPJL(Certificate in Pre-Advanced Japanese Language) & CAJL(Certificate in Advanced Japanese Language) students were honored to host from JICA on 30 June 2025 for an engaging and insightful visit. Exchanging ideas and experiences enriched our academic community and strengthened our commitment to global collaboration. Thank you, JICA, for inspiring the next generation of changemakers!

>>Japanese Workshop on “The Importance of Activities”

A workshop titled "The Importance of Activities" was organized by the CPJL and CAJL students of the Japanese Language Program on March 4th, 2025, at the Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA), University of Colombo, with the support of JICA volunteers. This occasion gave students a rare chance to learn about a different facet of education in Japan. We are deeply grateful to JICA for its ongoing support of the IHRA, UoC, in facilitating such enriching workshops.

🇯🇵IHRA Japanese Workshop No. 01 - 2024 "Shodo & Origami 🖌️🎴 organized by the students of Japanese Language Program (CBJL/CIJL), Institute of Human Resource Advancement - University of Colombo with the guidance of Vice Chancellor University of Colombo, Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne Professor Sagara Chandrasekara (Director – IHRA) and Ms. Sakura Karunaratne (External coordinator – CBJL/CIJL). The workshop successfully concluded on 22nd March 2024 at Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
First of all, we would especially want to express our gratitude to Mr. Yamada Tetsuya, Chief Representative of the JICA Sri Lanka/スリランカ事務所 for his assistance in finding such excellent resource persons. Our workshop will not be successful without his assistance.
We would like to express our gratitude to Ms. Miya Katayama, the JICA Sri Lanka/スリランカ事務所 Volunteer Coordinator, for her assistance in organizing the resource personnel.

Japanese Day 2023 🎌 at the University of Colombo was an enchanting celebration of Japanese culture and heritage that left a lasting impression on all who attended. From the captivating Inter University Japanese Speech Contest 📢 to the tantalizing flavors of Japanese cuisine 🍣, traditional music and dance performances 🎶, and engaging activities like the Tanabata experience 🎋, Game Corner 🎯 for some friendly competition, and exciting giveaways 🎁, attendees were treated to a feast for the senses. The event also offered hands-on experiences with Origami workshops 🪡, a mesmerizing Kendo demonstration 🥷, and a chance for cultural exchange 🤝. Additionally, visitors explored the Exhibition Corner 🎎, delving deeper into the richness of Japanese culture. As we reflect on this unforgettable occasion, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who joined us in making Japanese Day 2023 a resounding success. Let the spirit of cultural exchange continue to flourish as we eagerly anticipate future gatherings. 🌸🤝

The guest lecture on Japanese food culture “日本の食文化”, organized by students of the Japanese Language Program at the Institute of Human Resource Advancement, University of Colombo successfully concluded on 18th April 2024.

We would like to thank Mr. Saman Perera and Ms. Nayana Dissanayake, owners of the Tempura Shikisen Colombo, for being such wonderful resource persons during the lecture.
